Soke Masaaki Hatsumi

Masaaki Hatsumi was born in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, on December 2, 1931. He graduated from Meji University of Medicine in Tokyo, as a Hone-tsugi (Orthopedic Doctor).

At the age of 27 he began studying the martial art traditions taught by the Toshitsugu Takamatsu.  In 1972 Takamatsu-sensei made Hatsumi-sensei Soke (Grandmaster) of nine ryuha (schools) of ancient Japanese martial arts.  Soke Hatsumi founded the Bujinkan Dojo, which is the organization that contains all nine separate ryuha.

For additional information, I suggest checking Harry Mitrou’s excellent site – which is a dedication to Soke Masaaki Hatsumi. On the site you will find additional bio information along with examples of Soke’s art, books he’s authored, and honors/awards he’s received.
